Day at the Capitol for 2011 was a collaboration between the Colorado School Counseling Association, Colorado Council on High School/College Relations and Rocky Mountain Association for College Admissions Counseling and Colorado Career and Technical Educators. The day was begun at the Wells Fargo Building, a new venue for us which met our growing need for space. We had 105 attendees at this year’s event. Each organization gave an overview of their purpose and goals. CTE students gave presentations about a variety of organizations that support Career and Technical Education.
We walked to the Capitol for the mornings proceedings. A group of participants were taken to the house floor while house proceedings were taking place. Other participants observed from the gallery. Participants also observed from the senate gallery while still other participants toured the building.
In the afternoon back at the Wells Fargo Building we had lunch and heard from a number of legislators. Rep. Ken Summers, Sen. Rollie Heath, Sen. Pat Steadman provided updates about the Counselor Core Program and the efforts being made to save the program and even continue it in years to come. Ron Brady (Sen. Hudak’s aide and former president of CEA) expressed support for counselors. The state budget and its impact on K-12 education occupied a great deal of our time. Tonette Salazar and Stacy Lestina gave further updates about the legislation related to education and school counseling. It’s all about the budget this year! Sandy Austin was recognized for being chosen as one of the top 10 school counselors in the nation.
In the afternoon participants went back to the capital and observed committee work. It was a full, fun and informative day.
