Event Name:
Nobel Prize Winner Joseph Stiglitz
Joseph Stiglitz won the Nobel Prize in 2001 and forever changed economics. His pioneering work helped create a new branch of economics. In 2009 Thinkers 50, the global ranking of management gurus, placed him among the list of most influential thinkers. President Clinton appointed him Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers in 1995. Stiglitz is also the former Chief Economist to the World Bank.
Stiglitz sees globalization's unrealized potential to eradicate poverty and promote economic growth. He blames the market fundamentalism that endorses the view that a free market solves all problems flawlessly. Stiglitz believes one-size-fits-all economic policies can damage rather than help countries with unique financial, governmental and social institutions.
Stiglitz was one of the few individuals that predicted the present economic crisis. Stiglitz visionary work has helped explain the circumstances in which markets do not work well, and how selective government intervention can improve their performance.
Stiglitz next book is called Freefall - where he says the current global financial crisis carries a made in America label. He believes America exported bad economics, bad policies, and bad behavior to the rest of the world, only to cobble together a haphazard and ineffective response when the markets finally seized up. He will also discuss a way he believes to go forward. He has taught at Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Oxford and Columbia.
A signed book will be included as part of the admission price. This will be a fascinating event with a Nobel Prize winner who has changed society. Early RSVPs are suggested here.
