Does China Matter? - Sharing Cultural Experiences about China

The title, is based on a 1999 article in the journal, Foreign Affairs, by Gerald Segal, in which he suggested that China was a second-rate power. Randell Jackson, who lived in China for four years as a teacher of English will examine some of Segal's ideas from the present perspective and with a backdrop of his own experiences in China. He would like to involve everyone in thinking about cultural differences between the US and China today. (more...)

Frank and Francien Lucas left their country of birth, The Netherlands, in 1962, and have since lived in 4 different continents. They have lived a truly transient life, raising two daughters in constantly changing environments, with all the cultural and social challenges that poses for a family. During their stays in Europe, USA, South Africa and the Middle East, they gained a myriad of experiences which they want to share with other expat families. During this presentation Frank and Francien will reflect on those personal experiences and obviously share some remarkable encounters in beautiful countries. (more...)

The presentation by Dr.Ussama Makdisi, Professor of History and the first holder of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University, will dwell on the origins of anti-American sentiment in the Arab world. Rather than focusing exclusively on current events, this lecture will provide a historical interpretation of current U.S. Arab relations. It will explain how and why the rise of anti-American sentiment developed in the Arab world, what are its root causes, and how it might be mitigated. (more...)

What is society's attitude toward inequality? How do cultures deal with distinctions between people in their access to power and their level of status? This interactive presentation will explore these questions via the large and small power distance concept that Dutch Anthropologist Geert Hofstede introduced. We will also discuss the impact of this profound cultural difference on society in general and in the workplace. There will be a small group discussion to explore ways to bridge this cultural gap.
