While the contributions of OD have been many and significant, over the years multiple brands of OD have evolved – and sometimes to the detriment of the discipline. Internal and external consultants with diverse backgrounds and specialties have disparate views and approaches to the practice. Given the fact that there is no entity that can legally “certify” OD practitioners, the field has not yet reached the status of a true profession. Many clients have different expectations when they think about OD; and some claim different quality experiences with practitioners in a field where any one can self-appoint herself or himself to be an OD professional. The lack of standards and consistency constitute a serious problem. In light of these facts, what was OD meant to be? What is the field’s core reason for being? What belongs and does not belong in the field? How does OD Consulting differ from other types of consulting? How can we ensure the integrity of the OD field? And most important, (more...)
