On Wednesday, she was honored by the Rochester Women's Network not only for her business acumen, but also for her commitment to providing inspiration, leadership and opportunities to other women.
Van Bortel said she only does what is right.
"It's so important that women get into a position where they can help other women," she said after winning the Rochester Women's Network "W" Award. "What a wonderful life this has been. It's been a wonderful opportunity for me to help other women get started."
Other finalists for the award were Regine Calvar, co-owner of 360 Software LLC; Jackie Campbell, director, city of Rochester Bureau of Youth Services; Catherine Cerulli, director of the Laboratory of Interpersonal Violence and Victimization at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry; Sheila Gaddis, a partner with law firm Hiscock & Barclay and a Brighton Town Board member; and Angella Luyk, president and CEO of Midnight Janitorial.
The award ceremony capped RWN's fourth annual Splash! event, held at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa. Founded in 1978 and with a current membership of 500, RWN provides networking opportunities to a diverse variety of businesswomen, business owners, educators and others.
"This is a truly empowering organization," said Cynthia McGill, RWN president and co-pastor of New Life Fellowship in Rochester. "And a great place to network, meet friends and connect with other women."
